Giant Swallowtail again, 8/28/13

This morning, around 8:30 AM, the Giant Swallowtail (Papilio cresphontes) in the neighborhood again.  This individual is missing both tails; perhaps it's the same one.  Just one (dorsal) photo:

Milford Pt Baird's, White-rumped, PIPL 8/26/13

On 26 August 2013 at the western extension of the Francis Street spit, among the many shorebirds (mainly Semipalmated Plover & Sandpipers, Least Sandpipers, Black-bellied Plover,  SB Dowitcher, AMOY) were at least 2 White-rumped Sandpipers and a Baird's Sandpiper--both species found by John Oshlick around 4:00 PM.  Also present, a lone fledgling Piping Plover.  Below, a few record shots in the tradition of Richard Crossley.  For Baird's, check Shorebird Guide, p. 166, photo 3.  Juv Baird's tertials and greater coverts match 4th photo below.

Today, a cloudy August day, a Giant Swallowtail in the garden nectaring on Buddleia with Spicebush, Black, and Eastern Tiger Swallowtails (and a few female, worn Monarchs).  The Giant never stopped moving his wings.

White M, Red-banded Hairstreaks home garden, 8/12/13

Quite a few butterflies today, including Least, Tawny-edged, Broad-winged, Silver-spotted, Sachem, and Zabulon; Eastern Tiger, Black, and Spicebush Swallowtails; Red Admiral; White M and Red-banded Hairstreaks; Cabbage White, Orange Sulphur, Eastern Tailed Blue; Summer Azure.

Today, 8/12/13, a White M Hairstreak had been nectaring on the white Joe-Pye Weed for the past 3 hours (11 AM-2:00 PM).  Below, a few pictures of the White M and a few other butterflies.
